Türkiye Maintained the Second Place in the Construction Giants League

Despite the losses caused by the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine, increased project costs and risks, Türkiye was included in the list of
"The World's Top 250 International Contractors" with 40 companies this year, with its performance in 2022. Thus, Türkiye maintained its second place in the world in terms of the number of companies. While China is again the first with 81 companies in the list, the USA is in the third place with 39 companies. The share of Türkiye in the global construction market was 4.4%. The 2023 list, which was announced right after the award ceremony held for the companies included in the list last year, on August 22, 2023, with the participation of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, again revealed a proud picture for Türkiye. Turkish Contractors Association (TMB) President M. Erdal Eren said, “Despite the increasing problems in the international market, our contractors continue to represent our country in the second place in the global giants league. Moreover, we managed to maintain this success despite the war that has been going on for more than 1.5 years next to our country and the ongoing problems in our traditional markets. We aim to cover the loss we have experienced in our region due to the war with the Gulf expansion. Iraq, another of our traditional markets, can also offer new opportunities to our industry.”
The "World's Top 250 International Contractors List", which is published every year by the construction industry magazine ENR (Engineering News Record), which is referenced around the world, based on the revenues of the contractors from their activities abroad in the previous year, has been announced. Türkiye maintained its second place in the list with 40 companies. The awards were given by President Erdoğan at the ceremony held on August 22, 2023 to the contracting companies that entered the ENR lists last year.
The Turkish Contractors Association (TMB) announced the Türkiye results of the 2023 “World's Top 250 International Contractors List”. Accordingly, in its bulletin titled “Firms Face Challenges in the Big Picture”, ENR noted that the size of the global construction market increased from US$ 398 billion to US$ 428.5 billion in 2022. While pointing out the global high inflation, shortage of skilled labor and supply chain problems in the bulletin, it was stated that the projects undertaken in the sector in the midst of severe winds of change were advantageous for the companies, but the increasing project costs created question marks for the future.
2 Turkish companies are among the top 50
6 Turkish companies managed to be among the top 100 companies. As last year, 2 Turkish companies were among the top 50 companies. When viewed regionally; The activities of Turkish companies are mainly in Europe – including Russia- (9.2 billion USD), the Middle East (4.3 billion USD), Africa (3.1 billion USD) and Asia (1.9 billion USD) regions. concentrated.
“We succeeded despite the ongoing problem in our traditional markets”
TMB President M. Erdal Eren made the following assessments: “Despite the increasing problems in the international market, our contractors continue to represent our country in the second place in the global giants league. Moreover, we managed to maintain this success despite the war that has been going on for more than 1.5 years beside us and the ongoing problems in our traditional markets. I sincerely congratulate our 40 contracting companies, who, despite the difficulties, managed to enter the "World's Top 250 International Contractors List" of ENR Magazine with their entrepreneurial power.
As Turkish contractors, in the recovery period from the Covid-19 epidemic in 2021, with the support of the increase in oil prices, the size of the projects we undertook abroad exceeded 30 billion dollars. Right after, we were shaken by the emergence of the Russia-Ukraine war. The project size undertaken by the sector abroad, which was under both the global and regional effects of the war, was 19.1 billion dollars last year. The war continues and unfortunately continues to hurt from its humanitarian side. The international construction market is also rapidly affected by global economic and geopolitical developments. On the other hand, our President gave us instructions that we should increase our medium-term target to 75 billion dollars with confidence. We continue our work within the framework of this instruction.
“We are waiting for a solution to the letter of guarantee problem”
We aim to cover our job loss in Russia, our leading market, and Ukraine, which has come to the fore in recent years, with the Gulf countries, primarily Saudi Arabia, within the scope of our heated political relations. Iraq, another of our traditional markets, can also offer new opportunities to our industry. In addition to the war, cost increases and the shortage of financing were the prominent problems of the sector. We are in great difficulty in obtaining and accepting letters of guarantee for tenders abroad. We hope that good news will come from our state officials regarding the solution of the problem. Thus, we will be able to proudly and increasingly continue our role in increasing the foreign exchange income of our country and the employment of Turkish labor abroad.”
