As temperatures begin to drop, demand for electric heaters is increasing. However, choosing the right product requires consideration of more than just price. Heating capacity suited to the application, heating technology, resistance to outdoor conditions, control features, and safety are among the key factors that should be evaluated. Osman Ünlü, Board Member of Çukurova Isı, shares seven key criteria to consider when choosing an electric heater.

Electric heaters stand out as a practical, economical, and comfortable heating solution during the winter months, serving a wide range of applications. From residential terraces, balconies, and gardens to industrial facilities, cafés and restaurants, sports halls, exhibition areas, and warehouses, electric heaters can provide an efficient heating solution when the right product is selected.

However, with numerous models featuring different technologies and specifications available on the market, several important criteria should be taken into account during the selection process.

Osman Ünlü, Board Member of Çukurova Isı, outlined seven key factors to consider when purchasing an electric heater:

1. Choose the Right Heating Capacity for the Application

“When selecting an electric heater, the first consideration should be the characteristics of the area where the unit will be used. Factors such as the size of the space, whether it is indoors or outdoors, ceiling height, insulation conditions, and intended use determine the required heating capacity.

A heater with a capacity higher than necessary may result in unnecessary energy consumption, while an undersized unit may fail to provide sufficient thermal comfort. Therefore, accurately calculating the required heating capacity is essential.

2. High-Intensity Halogen Lamp Technology Should Be Preferred

The heating technology used is another important factor affecting the efficiency of the unit. Heaters equipped with high-intensity halogen lamp technology operate more efficiently than conventional electric heaters using standard resistance elements. This is because halogen lamps can convert approximately 99% of the electrical energy they consume into heat.

3. Choose Products with Short-Wave Infrared Technology

The wavelength of infrared radiation is another important criterion affecting the performance of electric heaters. Short-wave infrared heaters have a greater ability to transmit radiant heat compared with medium- and long-wave heaters.

Laboratory studies show that approximately 85% of the radiation emitted by a short-wave heater can reach the opposite surface, compared with around 60% for medium-wave heaters and 40% for long-wave heaters.

4. Check Suitability for Outdoor Conditions

For heaters intended for outdoor use, resistance to environmental conditions is another important selection criterion. Products used on residential terraces, balconies, and gardens, as well as in the outdoor areas of cafés and restaurants, should provide adequate protection against water and dust.

Choosing products with an IP55 protection rating therefore helps protect the heater against outdoor conditions and contributes to safe operation.

5. Look for Adjustable Power and Control Features

The ability to adjust the heater according to changing weather conditions and user requirements provides advantages in terms of both comfort and energy consumption. For this reason, the unit should offer adjustable power settings through a dimmer circuit or similar control technology.

6. Review Technical Documentation in Addition to the CE Marking

Relevant safety and conformity requirements should also be considered when selecting an electric heater. The CE marking is an important indication that a product complies with applicable European Union requirements concerning health, safety, and environmental protection.

However, the presence of the CE marking alone may not be sufficient for consumers to assess all technical characteristics and the overall reliability of a product. Users should therefore also review the product’s technical documentation and consider the reliability of the manufacturer.

When selecting an electric heater, the experience of the manufacturer and the quality of its after-sales services are just as important as the product itself.
